Fall is in the air: “Pasture on the Soqué River”

Soque_river

Fall is in the air–finally!  As late summer gives way to early fall here in north Georgia, I thought I’d include a painting to show what it looks like.  “Pasture on the Soqué River” is a small oil landscape that I did some years ago from a photo taken by one of my partners who has a lake house in extreme northeastern Georgia.  It’s a beautiful area, mostly very rural, with rolling pasture land and forests, farms and very small towns.  Every so often, you get a glimpse of the foothills of the Appalachians which we know as the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This is not a perfect painting, but it is a very typical roadside scene with a rusted metal gate and a weathered wooden fence.   It shows the dry grass of the pasture and a large sycamore tree with a little fall color, dark evergreens behind, and the hazy, low mountains in the distance.  My favorite part of this painting is the weedy foreground with tall grass leaning over, goldenrod in full bloom and a little sumac showing just a hint of the brilliant red color that makes fall really pop here.  It’s my favorite time of year because it means that, once again, we’ve survived the summer heat.

I hope you enjoyed this installment of Art in the Lab, a place to look at art, talk about art, learn about art, and just take a break to enjoy! Remember, Art makes life better.
